Section of the spine with colour-coded density map. Trabecular bone density decreases from blue via yellow to red. The scale ranges from red (0 mg/mm³) to blue (800 mg/mm³).
Osteoporosis is one of the most common causes of bone fractures in the elderly. Yet bone loss often remains undetected. In the BMDNow project, Fraunhofer researchers and partners aim to diagnose this skeletal disease and its preliminary stages early, without requiring additional examinations. AI-powered software supports early detection: it automatically evaluates existing CT scans and calculates bone density from them.
