An exoskeleton is set to facilitate daily life for people with brachial plexus palsy in the future.

Patients with brachial plexus palsy are regularly invited to workshops and closely integrated into the development of an initial demonstrator.

 
The brachial plexus, also known as the arm nerve plexus, transmits motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the shoulder, arm, and hand. If it is injured, for example in a motorcycle accident, this can result in sensory disturbances, loss of strength, and paralysis. In the PLEXO project, researchers at Fraunhofer are working with partners to develop a myoelectrically controlled exoskeleton intended to assist those affected in daily tasks. This body-worn assistance system is designed to be minimalist and textile-integrated, and should be light and unobtrusive to wear.
