Researchers at the Fraunhofer WKI and the Fraunhofer IAP have succeeded in producing a sustainable flame retardant for biobased materials using corn steep liquor.
Halogenated flame retardants pose ecological risks and are regarded as a threat to human health. Therefore, alternative solutions have been sought for many years. Researchers at Fraunhofer are focusing on sustainable, phosphorus-based raw materials derived from corn steep liquor. The phytic acid contained therein acts as an excellent natural flame retardant for biobased materials.
